Mr. Nostalgia Wishes You a Happy Thor’s Day…

Posted on: October 31, 2013

In honor of Thor: The Dark World coming out 2 Thursday’s from it’s Friday premier I present to you each and every Thursday leading to that day to be “Happy Thor’s Day”. Why?

Because Thursday is named after the Norse god of thunder, Thor. In Old English, Thursday means “Thor’s Day” or in Old Norse “thorsdagr”.

Thor, in the Old Norse Legends, is represented as a red-bearded god wielding the hammer Mjolnir, which was used as a weapon against the Jotuns (giants), and heard as the boom of thunder to humans. The Vikings, who worshipped these pagan gods before Christianity spread throughout their land, never feared the sound of thunder, for they knew Thor was out battling Frost Giants.

So, “Happy Thor’s Day” to you!

Mr. Nostalgia brings word of Wave 2 for Mattel’s Retro-active The Real Ghostbusters…

Posted on: October 31, 2013

Of course we all know that The Real Ghostbusters cartoon is based off the Ghostbusters movie (1984) and Ghostbusters 2 (which came out in 1989 and continued with the kid friendliness of the series that the cartoon had started) and not the Ghostbusters cartoon with the gorilla in it, right?  Right.  The Real Ghostbusters ran from 1986-1991, with Slimer! And the Real Ghostbusters starting in 1988 following right behind The Real Ghostbusters cartoon for an hour long Ghostbusting-animated Saturday morning.

A toy line was released from Kenner with the 4 Ghostbusters, the firehouse Ghostbusters headquarters, Ecto-1 and of course a ton of ghosts. But in 2010 Mattel began releasing the Retro-Action Ghostbusters figures which differed from the Kenner toys in many ways.  The Mattel figures are 8 inches, and are wearing actual clothes, whereas the Kenner toys were one plastic mold.  The chest of the 4 Ghostbusters is black, as if wearing a black t-shirt, but their jump suits are all fabric.  All 4 characters come with a proton pack that fits on their back and particle wand that not-so-well fits in their hand.  Egon also came with a PKE meter, Winston a ghost trap with foot pedal release, and Ray with a ghost sniffer (that device Peter was using in Dana’s apartment). An Exclusive Peter Venkman figure was also made with a sound chip of his voice from “Citizen Ghost” (Season 1, episode 11) saying 4 lines from the episode and had some “slime” on him like from the movie.

This year Wave 2 was released (well, not really a wave, one figure actually) continuing the line with Janine Melnitz dressed as a Ghostbuster (the costume is fabric as well. Janine appeared as a Ghostbuster at least twice –maybe even more- but for sure in Season 1, episode 12 – Janine’s Genie and in Season 2 episode 12  – Janine Melnitz, Ghostbuster). Janine comes with a proton pack and particle wand , ghost sniffer, ghost trap, figure of Slimer and the best villain ever created for the cartoon series the pumpkin-headed Samhain (who appeared in 3 episodes: Season 1, episode 8  – When Halloween was Forever, Season 3, episode 8 –  Halloween II ½, and finally Season 6, episode 10 – Déjà Boo). Samhain comes with a fabric robe, and the package can become the Ghostbuster firehouse.

Here’s a brief rundown of who played who in the films and voiced who in the cartoon series:

Dr. Peter Venkman – Bill Murray

Dr. Raymond Stantz – Dan Aykroyd

Dr. Egon Spengler – Harold Ramis

Winston Zeddemore – Ernie Hudson

Janine Melnitz – Annie Potts

Dr. Raymond Stantz – Frank Welker (140 episodes)

Dr. Egon Spengler – Maurice LaMarche (140 episodes)

Winston Zeddemore – Arsenio Hall (91 episodes), Buster Jones (49 episodes) (Ernie Hudson who played Winston in the films auditioned for the role and was turned down.)

Dr. Peter Venkman – Lorenzo Music (78 episodes), Dave Coulier (62 episodes)

Janine Melnitz – Laura Summer (78 episodes), Kath Soucie (62 episodes)

Samhain – Bill Martin (3 episodes)

Slimer – Frank Welker (33 episodes)

Dr. Peter Venkman – Dave Coulier (11 episodes)

Dr. Egon Spengler – Maurice LaMarche (7 episodes)

Winston Zeddemore – Buster Jones (6 episodes)

Janine Melnitz – Kath Soucie (4 episodes)

(Takes place around seven years later after all the ghosts vanish and the Ghostbusters go their own ways. When the ghosts return Egon calls on new recruits from his physics class.  A two part episode called Back in the Saddle had Venkman, Ray and Winston return).

Dr. Egon Spengler – Maurice LaMarche (40 episodes)

Janine Melnitz – Pat Musik (40 episodes)

Slimer – Billy West (40 episodes)

Dr. Peter Venkman – Dave Coulier

Winston Zeddemore – Buster Jones

Dr. Raymond Stantz – Frank Welker

Dr. Peter Venkman – Bill Murray

Dr. Raymond Stantz – Dan Aykroyd

Dr. Egon Spengler – Harold Ramis

Winston Zeddemore – Ernie Hudson

Janine Melnitz – Annie Potts

Hope you enjoyed that trip down Memory Lane with the new release of the Retro-Action The Real Ghostbusters.

Mr. Nostalgia brings word of the new X-Men Days of Future past trailer…

Posted on: October 29, 2013

Prepare to get chills, because this new X-Men movie looks amazing.  Please, never let Bryan Singer leave the X-Men franchise again.  He is just too good a director to NOT be doing these films.

Take a look over at

I’ve always wanted to say that, one of the coolest phrases ever uttered in a Marvel Comic book; it was posted today on the official Disney Parks Blog by Jonathan Frontado that the Marvel Avenger’s Academy is located in Disney’s Oceaneer Club.

Getting to meet Captain America and “virtually” suit up in Iron Man’s armor isn’t the only thing you get to do here.  A multi-day task, the kids are briefed by Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. that they are the newest recruits to join S.H.I.E.L.D. After being briefed, the “agents” begin working on their costumes when Captain America comes in to see how the new recruits are doing.

When they come back for more training they intercept a message from the Red Skull that he plans on turning the Disney Magic into a weapon, and even worse, the Youth Counselors that they’ve been working with are under a spell.  It’s now up to them to save the day!

Besides “virtually” suiting up as Iron Man, Thor’s hammer Mjolnir, Captain America’s shield, and Iron Man’s suit are on display.

Mr. Nostalgia Discusses that the size of a collection doesn’t matter with the help of a few “Happy Haunts”…

Posted on: October 28, 2013

Collections can come in all shapes and sizes, as can collectibles.  The first one I’m going to show you came in a Large, is machine washable, and was given to me by my sister.  Confused?  Don’t be.  It’s a t-shirt.  No matter what you collect there is a t-shirt for it. I’m a jeans and t-shirt kind of guy, so this makes my life very easy.  My t-shirt collectibles, which I DO wear, can be basically separated into two piles: Disney and Marvel Comics.  Though since Disney now owns Marvel, I guess that really makes it one pile?

Some of my collections I have lots of items to.  Some I only have a few.  But to me, the total inventory of a collection doesn’t matter, as I’ve said before, it’s the sentimental memories they bring back that matters.

The shirt my sister got me  is a black t-shirt that says “Gracey Manor”, the once-un-official-now-official name of Disney’s The Haunted Mansion.  Myself, I love Disney World’s Haunted Mansion.  The back of the shirt says “Beware of Hitchhiking Ghosts”, has a picture of the skeleton Hitch-hiking ghost “Ezra” thumbing for a ride, then the phrase “999 Happy Haunts” (though we know there is always room for one more).

T-shirt front

T-shirt back

So, I kind of have a Disney’s Haunted Mansion collection.  Besides this shirt and the 7 issue comic book series I posted the other day from Slave Labor Graphics, I also have:

A Haunted Mansion bumper sticker that reads “This Car Breaks for Hitchhiking Ghosts”

A set of 6 Haunted Mansion buttons the buttons are:   1) the hallway wallpaper that says “Haunted Mansion”,  2) Haunted Mansion maid in a grave yard with a grave stone reading RIP and a raven on it,  3) a picture of the Walt Disney World Haunted Mansion that has the phrase ‘It’s Your Funeral” on it,  4) a raven,  5) what looks to be a coffin with bat wings, a full moon and a raven in it, 6) one of the Hitchhiking Ghosts known as Gus

A case of Haunted Mansion mini-magnets for your fridge  coffin (these are packed away so I can’ list their contents, sorry)

A Haunted Mansion license plate that says “The Haunted Mansion Doom Buggy Magic Kingdom RIP 999 Ghosts”

A tape “A Spooky Night in Disney’s Haunted Mansion” (“The Original Terrifying Sounds, Chilling Chants, Horrible Hosts, and the song “Grim Grinning Ghosts”.)  This tape, originally released in 1969, was rereleased in 1998 and features the voice talents of : Thurl Ravenscroft as Narrator, Pete Rendoudet as Ghost Host, Ronny Howard (yes, THAT Ronny Howard) as Mike, Robie Lester as Karen, and Eleanor Audley as Madame Leota (This Ghost Host has an echo voice sound that is not scary and really makes you miss the voice of Paul Frees’ Ghost Host)

Not pictured: a post card and a magnet of The Walt Disney World Haunted Mansion

The book “The Haunted Mansion: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies” by Jason Surrell,

A teaser poster of the Haunted Mansion movie (though the book and poster were so MUCH better than the film itself).

About 11 items, not a lot really.  I did have this great bobble head set of the Hitchhiking Ghosts, but it fell from a shelf and broke, which was a shame, it was really cool.  But, for me, I don’t need a ton of items for this collection.  This is more than enough because all these items, with the exception of the t-shirt my sister gave me, I bought with my wife, and we have many memories of riding the ride together.

Besides, it’s like Yoda said in The Empire Strikes Back, “Size matters not…”

So, no matter how big or small your collection might be, so long as it brings you joy and lots of memories, that is all that counts, and any other collector who says differently, just ignore them, after all, it’s YOUR collection in the first place, not theirs.

Ghostbusters wand will not be available everywhere

Posted on: October 27, 2013

Matty Collector recently posted this news about the Ghostbusters Neutrino wand.

Due to country restrictions (which Mattel has no control over) the Neutrino Wand will not be able to ship to the following counties:

EU Member States: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the UK.

Torn between making as accurate of a wand as possible or compling with country codes, we went with the most accurate possible. Sorry for any inconvience, again, this is not something Mattel can control. To be compliant in all of these countries the Wand would have needed to look extremely different and that did not seem like the best service to fans.

Mr. Nostalgia Presents the SLG Disney Haunted Mansion Comic Covers…

Posted on: October 25, 2013

Back on October 9 I posted that under the new Disney Kingdoms banner, Disney will be publishing a new comic called Disney Kingdoms: Seekers of the Weird.  While the first issue will be out January of 2014, and will deal with the “Museum of the Weird”, a walk-through-attraction created by Rolly Crump that was to be connected to the Haunted Mansion and would hold all sort of curiosities from around the globe, I thought I would post the covers to the 7 issue Slave Labor Graphics Haunted Mansion to get everyone ready for this new book, since the first issue is in some-way related to the Haunted Mansion.
